As I awake from I restless night sleep I am excited and nervous. It has always been my dream to travel to another country and experience a culture different from my own. I make a quick stop at Zippy's to purchase a Zipac, a staple boxed lunch for anyone traveling outside of Hawaii. I arrive at the airport three hours before my flight. There is no line which I find peculiar. A sign reads that my flight on ANA will now be changed to United... lucky me. Dragging my luggage an additional four terminals I find myself in the back of an extensive line. I am fortunate that both the check-in and security checkpoint were quicker than normal. Arriving at the gate I see an enormous plane. Reality sets in and soon I will be on board for eight hours traveling to another country!

I was pleasantly surprised that the plane ride was not grueling as I projected it to be. I slept most the way and made it safely to Narita, Japan. Local time was 1:20p. Having a four hour layover gave my Professor and I the opportunity to get some food and explore the airport. I splurged and paid 6000y or 60USD on my first authentic Japanese meal. I ordered the Sashimi platter and Garlic Steak. Both were excellent. I also bought a small bottle of sake which was very dry and not very appetizing. After our meal we ventured though the airport. Finding a Japanese version of McDonalds was a treat. They offered avocado in their signature burgers with a special sauce. Choices included chicken, beef, or shrimp on a special bread. The line was very long and prices were cheaper than Hawaii. There were various shops where you could purchase snacks, souvenirs and other local commodities.
